Atlantic Coast Conference Basketball

Normally regarded as the best basketball conference in the nation year after year, the ACC is no disappointment this year.  With 4 teams in the top 11, the conference has already boasted 3 teams at the number 1 spot in the rankings this season.  Wake Forest, Duke, and North Carolina have all held the top spot, but the level of play of the other teams in the conference is what has caught my attention.  Wake Forest BasketballWake Forest was number 1 in the country until they lost to a 14-5 Virginia Tech team.  North Carolina's Ty LawsonNorth Carolina was number 1 for awhile to start the regular season before they lost to a 16-6 Boston College Team.  Duke's Gerald HendersonAnd most recently at number 1, Duke lost an early-season game to Michigan before being ousted by Wake Forest last night.  The level of play is so high in the ACC, there are 10 teams with double digit wins this season.  The list of successful teams goes on and on as Clemson, who started the season 16-0 and is now 17-2, is number 11 in the country, BC, Florida State, and Miami have all had strong seasons and none of whom have lost more than 6 games.  It’s a tough game every night for the teams in this conference due to the hostility of the gyms where these teams play and the high level of competition that they’re used to.  The conference has always played at this high of a level and probably always will.  I’m partial to the West Coast Conference, and who knows how the top teams in our conference would match up against the top teams in their conference, but as far as depth goes, the ACC is unrivaled in the country.  ACCWhen tournament time comes, look for a large number of Atlantic Coast Conference teams to be included in March Madness.  With their impressive records and strength of schedules, the committee will be hard pressed to not allow these teams to play on into March.

Margarito vs. Mosley

I watched the Antonio Margarito vs. Sugar Shane Mosley fight Saturday night on HBO and was shocked at what a great show it was.

Many people predicted Margarito to beat Mosley and retain his welterweight title belt, and few people gave Mosely much aof a chance.  But from the opening bell, Mosley hit Margarito with strong lefts and rights, winning the first 8 rounds decisively.  http://assets.nydailynews.com/img/2009/01/25/alg_mosley.jpg

Sugar Shane knocked Margarito down at the end of the eighth and Margarito’s corner should have thrown in the towel after that, because it didn’t take Mosley long to finish the knockout soon after the start of the ninth round, at 11:03 pm eastern time.  The win moved Mosley to 46-5 overall with 39 knockouts.

Consequently, the loss at the Staples Center pushed Margarito down to 37-6 with 27 knockouts.   I don’t watch a lot of boxing matches, but I do watch the big ones and I was surprised at how much Mosley dominated Margarito.  Margarito never had a chance and Mosley’s knock-down and knock-out punching sequences were very impressive.  Mosley is a great fighter!

January Sports Month

The Arizona Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Eagles 32-25 today to advance to their first superbowl ever.  This was a surprise to the football world because the Cardinals were not expected to go this deep into the playoffs and no one thought they would make it to the superbowl.  But they played extremely well including 3 touchdown catches from Larry Fitzgerald, who is now regarded as one of the five beLarry Fitzgeraldst receivers in the game today.  Playing in the NFC West, the Cardinals are hardly challenged in their own division with thier schedule including 2 games against Seattle, San Francisco, and St. Louis(All of whom have lower than .500 winning percentages).  But they proved to be one of the top two teams in the National Football Team by advancing to the big game.  The Cardinals have a balanced offensive attack that they utilize extremely well.  Their receivers, Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin, and Jerheme Urban are all sure-handed and fast, but their running backs really bolster their team.  Tim Hightower, Edgerrin James, and JJ Arrington split the load on the ground and keep their offense moving.  Their defense plays very well together and who could forget their reborn quarterback Kurt Warner?  It is going to take a good team to have a great game in the super bowl if they want to beat this Arizona team!Kurt Warner

In the other game on Sunday, Baltimore was playing Pittsburgh for the third time this season, the previous two won by the Steelers.  Regarded as one of the best if not the best defenses in the NFL, Baltimore has been playing well lately, largely due to the success of their rookie QB, Joe Flacco.  Pittsburgh has arguably the best all-around team, but they will have to beat Baltimore and a surging Arizona team to prove that they really are the best.Pittsburgh vs. Baltimore

The NBA is also in full swing at the moment, but most of the league is being dominated by a handful of teams, the Lakers, Celtics, Magic, Cavaliers, and a few others, while the rest of the league is just full of bad teams.

Lebron over Garnett

College basketball is rolling as well, with the conference seasons just getting underway, and upsets seem to happen almost every day!  Davidson guard Stephen Curry.

It’s a great time to be a sports fan with all of these great sporting events taking place and all these incredible teams and athletes putting on a show for us every night!

The Production of Sports Today

As I was watching a large amount of sports this weekend(college basketball, NBA,  and NFL playoffs) I started to think about how much of a production the events of the major sports in our country has become!  These NFL games, the playoff ones especially, are heavily covered matches with numerous commercials the week before, to pregame shows before every game, to the games selling out almost the minute they go on sale for ridiculous amounts of money.  The fields are equipped with millions of cameras and microphones that make for the best possible coverage of the plays.  A camera covering a football field. There are even HD TV cameras suspended over the field to catch close-up slow-mo action shots.  The way we watch NFL games on TV has completely changed in the past ten years or so.  NBA games are a pretty big production as well with ticket prices being so high and games being so well covered.  There is a huge amount of advertising done for the NBA and the games are heavily watched and attended.  Even college basketball games are a big deal on TV nowadays.  Two camera men.I just wanted to point out the difference between big time sports on TV today, and in the past, when maybe one camera was used, and there were no alternate angles, and rarely were you able to hear the sound on the court or field.  Now we have a large amount of angles and the best cameras money can buy to spoil us with these broadcasts.  Big screen at home.TV coverage of sports has come an incredibly long way over the years.
